IOWA CITY, Iowa--Fire investigators from the Iowa City Fire Department have completed the investigation into the origin and cause of the fire that occurred the evening of January 22nd at 1515 Jackson Avenue. Unattended cooking in the attached apartment has been identified as the accidental cause. A fire originating in a pot of oil on the stovetop ignited nearby combustibles and quickly spread through the ceiling of the structure. The building and contents suffered extensive damage.
Properly installed and functioning smoke alarms are credited with providing early notification of the fire, enabling residents of the apartment to escape without injury. Residents are reminded to check smoke alarms monthly and develop and practice a fire escape plan.
